Xavi Hernandez explained why he beat Frenkie de Jong in the second half of Barcelona’s victory over Elche at the Camp Nou.
De Jong left in the second half with a score of 2-2 and was replaced by Riqui Puig in the last 15 minutes.
Barcelona went on to win the match thanks to a late Nico Gonzalez goal, and Xavi explained the substitution after the match.
“He has given us things. He may not be as fluent as Gavi and Nico but he is putting in an amazing effort,” he said.
“He gave us a good defensive job, getting the second balls back. It’s also a matter of fatigue. He played a lot and that ended up being the case.”

De Jong was reportedly whistled by some support sections as he made his way off the field. There has been speculation in recent weeks that it could be sold to raise some much-needed cash.
The Dutchman’s father also spoke about his future and admitted that some of the top European clubs are already in contact but he does not expect his son to leave Barcelona anytime soon.
