you welcome in very small waysyahoo live Fatherhood and Motherhood A series of joys and challenges of raising a child.

The two-time World Cup champions who play professionally in the Gotham FC Women’s National Football League raised their young family in February when they adopted new daughter Sloane Phillips. While the 10-month-old isn’t quite ready for sports just yet, married football stars have recently partnered with him, promoting fun in youth sports and encouraging youngsters to stay active.

Before that, new moms talk to Yahoo Life about parenting, supporting young athletes, and trying to find time for date night.

How would you describe your approach to parenting?

Ali Krieger: Ultimately, we want to allow Sloan to make her own decisions and give her the tools to navigate her life and journey. We’ll be there every step of the way to help guide her – not necessarily telling her what to do, but just encouraging her to live a happy and healthy life.

Ashlyn Harris: I’ll add that [being] important team. The good thing about Ali and I is that we hold on to each other and, above all, make our child understand Why. We teach children why certain values (such as empathy and humility) are so important in this day and age. It’s interesting that we always teach children from a young age to do or be this – “I want to be a professional soccer player” or “I want to be a cop” – but I want to teach Sloan how to be a good person and serve her community [and that goes beyond] a Profession.

How was parenting during the pandemic?

if: Sloan was just a kid, so it was really fun because we were able to really focus on her. In addition, we had to go to training; Our protocols were very strict. We couldn’t go anywhere or do much, but we had a newborn to take care of! We only had two weeks of maternity leave, so we [jumped] Right in season, set up our schedules and we’ll be raising a newborn. It was hard but fortunately we were able to spend some time with her. This was our main focus, just making sure she was alive [laughs].

Uh: I found it a little more difficult; I was more afraid [about] Giving birth to a newborn baby in a global pandemic. Everyone wants to come and meet the baby and it was a tough time for Ali and I had to say “no” a lot; We kept our circle tight. It has been difficult to get people tested for COVID before they even enter the house. It’s an exciting time for both of us to have a baby but then COVID spreads; It was a weird and scary time – even though we were pretty excited about it being there. We just tried to navigate the two.

What surprised you when you became a parent?

if: The amount of patience I have and the amount of love I can give someone is incredible. Although it is not our blood, we have never felt this much love in our lives. It’s just so incredible to feel those emotions and feelings in general; Our hearts are exploding every day. She is a beautiful baby, very happy and in good health. We are so grateful, but how much patience you have to have – in admiration, without sleep – and how much love can make you feel, and how much you can give [is surprising].

To this point, how do you carve out time for yourself?

Uh: Good question. We are still trying to find out. … we work around the clock. We are professional athletes and activists and we have to keep up with our social presence. Now, we’re grinding really hard but the baby is down at 6:30 and that’s our time. We sit on the sofa, maybe have a glass of wine, and really, we just talk about how grateful we are. We said we’d have a date night once a week but we haven’t gotten there yet [laughs].

Do you have any advice when it comes to deceiving parents?

if: We are used to it from professional sports and in general, I feel the comments or criticism have nothing to do with us but more to do with them. … There is no right or wrong way to do things and because we are public figures, there is a different approach. Ultimately, you want your child to be happy, safe, and successful. We’ll do everything we can – taking little bits of our childhood and what we’ve learned on our travels – to help it succeed. Everything anyone says about this goal means nothing to me. I think we are doing a good job.

Uh: We all build families in different ways but we all come from a place of love, understanding and respect and there is no right or wrong way. My family may look different, but we are beautifully different. Building a home for a child is based on love, not on its shape. I am proud of Ali, Ali and Sloan. There is more love under this roof than ever before. Sloan knows how much we love her.

How did you get involved with ?

if: I am very happy with what they are doing to keep the kids in sports during this time. As culture and society continue to evolve, I think we have to go back to the roots of sport and have fun. Being around people who want you to succeed and GoGo squeeZ is trying to bring love and fun back to the game. Not to mention their snacks – we gave them to our baby this morning. It was a no-brainer for us.
