Virgil van Dijk has already warned Real Madrid as shock Liverpool transfer rumour emerges

It’s a crucial time for Joe Gomez and his Liverpool career.

The 24-year-old has only managed 12 minutes in the Premier League so far this season and has made just nine appearances in all competitions.

Injury problems played their part, but the arrival of Ibrahima Konate in the summer and the consistency of Joel Matip propelled him down the standings at Anfield.

The defender’s future at Liverpool has come into question in recent weeks due to his links to Aston Villa.

Now he is said to be a target for La Liga giants Real Madrid.

According to the Daily Mail, Carlo Ancelotti is seeking defensive reinforcements in the summer, and the 24-year-old is considered a potential option for the Spanish club.

Gomez could certainly be excused from considering his options, with the World Cup looming, he should play regularly to force himself into Gareth Southgate’s plans.

However, the upcoming winter period is likely to see an increase in England international match time with matches being played every other day.

Virgil van Dijk is currently absent from Covid and missed the last two matches against Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite this, Jurgen Klopp turned to newcomer Konate to step up in the Dutchman’s absence and the young defender has already proven why Liverpool spent £36m to give him from Leipzig.

Last season Liverpool struggled to forge a consistent partnership and often had to force their midfielders back, but the Reds boss is spoiled for choice this season, despite Nat Phillips also fighting for minutes.

Phillips is expected to continue in the summer, if not in January, which is only focused on Gomez’s role at Liverpool.

While minutes may not be guaranteed at the moment, Gomez will have a huge role to play at Anfield in the years to come.

“Obviously it hasn’t been his best year, but that’s how it goes,” Klopp told the media ahead of the Newcastle game.

“We are patient, and Joe is patient. I have no plans to give anyone out on loan in the winter.”

Van Dijk has already admitted that both Konet and Gomez are his long-term successors.

Speaking almost to a fan at Liverpool’s annual visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, the 30-year-old sat down to the couple’s side and admitted: “Those two people will eventually take my place.”

The duo may not be the first choice at the moment, with Klopp strongly favoring van Dijk and Matip – but, at just 22 and 24 years old, they represent the future of Liverpool’s defence.

Arguably the only thing that stopped Gomez from holding back during his time at Liverpool was injuries. He formed a formidable partnership with Van Dijk in the club’s title-winning season before being sidelined for 10 months in the following campaign.

Not surprisingly, there have been rumors of interest in Gomez from the likes of Villa and Real Madrid, he has kept 31 clean sheets in 82 league games since arriving in 2015.

But it is not in excess of the requirements.

He is a vital figure in this team’s future and will be determined to carve his way into Klopp’s immediate plans.
