Portland, ore – The Portland Timbers prepare to host the 2021 MLS Cup against New York City FC on Saturday, December 11th at 12 noon (Pacific). The match will see national broadcasts on ABC and UniMás.
The Timbers captured the Western Conference Championship and advanced to the MLS Cup for the third time in the club’s history with a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in front of a crowd of 25,218 fans in Providence Park on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time Portland has hosted the MLS Cup after playing on the road in 2015 against Columbus Crew and Atlanta United in 2018. Portland is the tenth team in league history to reach the MLS Cup three times over the least.
In the 2021 postseason, the Timbers outperformed their opponents 6-1, including a 5-1 margin when playing at Providence Park, and scored two consecutive closings. Portland will face NYC for the first time in a MLS Cup playoff game. The two teams exited in the last quarter-final round of the MLS Is Back tournament on August 1, 2020, resulting in a 3-1 victory for the Timbers. Portland leads the all-time series against New York with a record score of 5-1-0, outselling them 10-3.
