Major League Soccer has spent more than 25 years trying to change sentiments about soccer in the United States while competing with fast-paced, high-score sports like the NFL and NBA.

MLS is focused on expanding its clubs into the larger sporting markets and increasing its popularity among the younger generations. However, the university has seen its fair share of obstacles, such as financial problems, leadership changes, and its constant struggle to attract a large television audience.

Creating a huge TV audience is everything for the league. Media rights deals are the cornerstone of how the league operates and the driving force for its longevity, growth and operating revenue. The association is looking to create a new media rights package in 2022. Its current eight-year media deal with ESPN, Fox and Univision has generated an estimated $90 million annually since 2015.

The league hopes to capitalize on its young fan base, social media presence, and the FIFA World Cup, which the United States will host in 2026.
