The festive seasons of every year are always filled with great foods and festive festivities. While you enjoy all the festivities and savor the friendships during this season, it is also important to be aware of healthy consumption and avoid excessive weight gain.

This may seem like a daunting idea to you at first, but you don’t have to shy away from the joy of family gatherings at all. Nutritionists believe there are quite a few easy ways to stay away from being overweight, like by not skipping meals before a huge holiday dinner, or once you get enough rest.

In fact, another great way to avoid gaining weight during the holiday season doesn’t come by paying attention to what you eat, but by Just be aware of your drinking habits.

But why should you care about the effect of alcohol consumption on weight gain? According to Bruning, there are two main reasons.

First of all, alcohol lowers your inhibitions. In the world of eating, lower inhibition leads to higher consumption. If you’ve had a few drinks at the meal, it may lead to eating a dish or two more than usual, too.

On the other hand, while alcoholic beverages may seem innocuous in the weight-gain realm per se, having a few of them can lead to a significant weight gain as the holiday season winds down.

Many people don’t realize that Alcoholic drinks are full of calories. Pure alcohol contains seven calories per gram, which is more than twice the number of calories per gram in carbohydrates and close to the calorie content in a gram of fat.

“People often blame carbs for weight problems, but we need to look at the whole picture of what we’re consuming,” Browning says. “Alcohol is high in calories.”

To avoid weight gain, Bruning recommends drinking in moderation every day, especially if your holiday celebrations last several days: One drink for women and two drinks for men. One drink equals a 12-ounce can of beer, a glass of wine, or one shot of strong liquor.

“I think it’s a much lower threshold than a lot of people realize,” Browning says. “[The] The holidays can be a fun time when some wheels get stuck, so it’s important to keep in mind.”
