Supplements: New report states rancid omega 3 fish oil could increase cholesterol levels

Omega-3 fish oil supplements are among the most popular. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are extremely important for your health. However, as with most things, these supplements run the risk of becoming spoiled and when you do so they can do more harm than good.

According to a new report from Labdoor, more than 10 percent of fish oil supplements tested by the organization were found to be spoiled.

The report states that “the majority of products passed oxidation tests, although 1,454 products reported peroxide levels at or above the upper limit.”

All supplements will come with a “best before” date on their label, and while they won’t expire in the traditional sense of being unsafe to digest, they will be rendered worthless if taken after that date.

Rancid Omega-3 capsules reveal that stockpiling and the best beforehand dates are key.

Research published this week found that many popular omega-3 fish oil supplements are rancid, which arises when the product is oxidized.

Fish oil is particularly susceptible to oxidation, which occurs faster when exposed to heat, air, or light.

“For us, they’ll start to smell and feel good,” said Dan Mark, director of research at Labdoor.

It remains to be seen whether rancid fish oil is harmful or not.

So far, separate studies have shown that highly oxidized fish oil capsules can have a negative effect on cholesterol levels.

At least two comparative studies to date show that consumption of ransom fish oil can increase levels of bad cholesterol.

And in animal studies, oxidized fatty acids have been found to cause organ damage, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, among other problems.

Omega-3 Innovations said that with the oxidation of fish oil, new byproducts begin to form in the oil called lipid peroxides, as well as harmful aldehydes and ketones.

The health website added: “It is these oxidation byproducts that give off the stench and taste of rotten fish.

The rate at which omega-3 molecules are oxidized depends on a number of factors, including how the fish was harvested and the oil was processed. But once the oil starts to oxidize, there’s no turning back.

“At this point, it is simply a matter of time before the oil spoils and counteracts the benefits of omega-3 fish oil.”
