Spokesman resigns to prioritize mental health | Local News

Trip Stilnicki, who served as a spokesperson for Governor Michael Logan Grisham for three years, will leave that position at the end of the year.

Stelnicki, who submitted his resignation to Lujan Grisham on December 10, said he had no immediate plans for the future except for a move from Santa Fe to Albuquerque.

“I look forward to not knowing what exactly is next,” said Stilnicki, a former journalist who worked for him. new mexican for more than three years before joining the staff of Lujan Grisham in late 2018.

In his resignation letter, Stelnicki said he wanted to “step back to prioritize my mental health”. In that letter, he wrote that he considered it a “privilege” to work for the governor.

He wrote, “I may not have always met the standards you set for myself or that you set for me, but I made the effort at every opportunity.” “I stand idly by and take responsibility for all of it, and I hope the good will outweigh the bad in the last reckoning.”

Stelnicki, who will turn 30 on Christmas Day, said he is still working on Lujan Grisham’s State of the State address, which begins the 2021 legislative session in mid-January.

He said he admires conservatism because it “is an example of a civil servant in that it won’t always be political. Perhaps it would have served better if it were.”

“She will involve herself in the things her employees have to deal with. She talks to people and meets them and gets phone calls from people and she wants to fix it. And she’s done that 9 times out of 10.”

Stelnicki’s dark, ironic sense of humor often manifested itself when he performed stand-up comedy at local clubs. His material extended from the political to the societal to the absurdity of everyday life.

In one of his stand-ups this year, he encouraged people who have not yet returned to work due to the pandemic not to return to work. He said the worst they could do to you was send letters demanding payment.

“If someone asks you for your credit score, give them your horoscope,” he said.

But Stelnicki’s public comments on behalf of the governor’s office sometimes got him into trouble. In April 2020, shortly after the coronavirus pandemic hit New Mexico, he posted a comment on Twitter referring to those who wish to reopen businesses as a “death cult.”

The comment sparked criticism from Republican leaders across the state, who demanded an apology. He didn’t give them one.

“I’ve been in a little hot water,” he said on Monday. “Nothing so terrible.”

In a statement, Lujan Grisham praised Stelnicki’s “intelligence and strategic thinking” but said his biggest flaw was “that he thought he was funnier than me”.

Nora Myers Sackett, a spokeswoman for Logan Gresham, wrote that Deputy Director of Communications Maddy Hayden will head the communications office in the short term.

Stelnicki, who earns more than $108,000 a year, said he had no immediate plans to return to government or the press.

“But who knows, six months from now I might feel differently,” he said. “For now, I’d be happy to mop the floors.”
