SOCCER TO OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS GAME

The University of Minnesota Duluth football team will open this weekend’s conference session with a two-game home game against Minot State University on Friday, September 17 and the University of Mary on Sunday, September 19.

The conference opening Friday against Minot will also see the program’s annual Mental Health Awareness Game, in partnership with the Student Athletic Advisory Council, or SAAC. Their campaign, called Project Green Bandana, aims to reduce the stigma of mental illness within the athletic department and the university as a whole, support those suffering from mental illness, and disseminate mental health and awareness resources. The Green Bandana project focuses on reminding student athletes and community members that β€œit is very important to feeling lonely, and that mental health should be treated like physical health.”

In the last UMD match against Minot, the Bulldogs came out with a 1-0 home victory, scoring the winner of the match Sarah Stang. A goal keeper Sophia Greens, who was a sophomore, played every 90 minutes and came out with seven saves and one clean sheet.

The Bulldogs hope to leave their past behind when they face the University of Mary on Sunday. When the teams last played in November 2019 – unknown at which time one of the Bulldogs’ last games until this season was played – the Thieves had won 4-0 at home.

Another UMD Soccer student athlete will learn about her Kicks for Causes organization at Sunday’s game, too. old Ebelin Morales Benites She chose the National Kidney Foundation as its cause of the year. She says she chose the organization because “it’s easy for people with kidney disease to feel lonely in their struggle because like many invisible illnesses, it’s not clear what someone with kidney failure or chronic kidney disease might go through on a daily basis. That’s why it’s so important.” Organizations like the National Kidney Foundation – because it reminds people with kidney disease that they are not alone, and that there are many people out there who want to help.”

The kick-off time for Friday’s game has been set at 6:00 pm at Malwski Stadium. For the full schedule for the 2021 season, click here.
