There are a lot of things I struggle with in life – not least getting into a pair of socks without tearing one or both legs – but two things are particularly relevant to this story: Hip pain (related to an injury in my early twenties when I felt too impervious to I listen to the advice of a psychiatrist), and anxiety.
Why these two keys here? Well, unlike the imperative to lift my socks up before I walk out the door, are two things I’ve found that PEMF treatment has helped infinitely—in a relatively short amount of time.
We are rarely able to solve a problem by lying down (unless your specific problem is that you are very exhausted) but that is exactly what I was told to do when I joined the PEMF mat workshop.
I’ve always leaned toward talk therapy – psychosynthesis, electrotransformation, cognitive behavioral therapy and so on – and yet experts, more and more, are severing the links between our physical bodies and our mental well-being. And I’m not just talking about eating nutritious foods or taking a walk, although these are definitely ingredients.
So why didn’t I give my body the same treatment as my mind? The answer was I didn’t know, but after one session on the PEMF mat (waiting for an explanation of what on earth that means), I felt better than I had been doing in months – maybe even years.
So what is PEMF? PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) treatment sends magnetic energy into the body. These energy waves work with your body’s natural magnetic field to improve healing.
“PEMF (pulse electromagnetic field) therapy has been around for over 60 years (some even say as early as 2000 B.C.),” Lauren Berlingeri, co-founder of HigherDOSE, the celebrity-loving brand behind the PEMF mat I alluded to at the beginning of this article. “It is a biohacking and rehab therapy that helps regenerate damaged or injured cells throughout the body. Currents are delivered in low-frequency bursts – and different wavelengths have different effects. For example, with my PEMF infrared mat, the first two settings are more relaxing and help you sleep, while the two higher settings are better for energy and focus. Just a few years ago, PEMF was only available to those who could afford thousands and attend weekly sessions in a clinic, and it all needed to be under the supervision of a medical professional. “PEMF treatment is typically performed by lying on a special mat that has a copper coil or electromagnet. This allows a pulsating magnetic field to pass through your body at a deeper level with more targeted control for a longer period of time,” explains Lauren.
It sounds intimidating, but in reality the PEMF frequencies are no different from what you would actually experience in nature, which means that your DNA and your cells are not negatively affected, she assures me.
I’ve now been using a PEMF mat for two months – a relatively short period when it comes to speech therapy but, as it turns out, there’s enough time for physical therapy to completely change my life. Here’s how…
After my first workshop, I began making time each morning to simply “lie down,” a rather unusual daily task. Sometimes I lie on it, try different poses, sometimes I do yoga sequences on it and sometimes I squat and do a meditation or breathing exercise, but you can use it any way you like – as long as you’re on it, you’re benefiting from it.
I noticed unusually quickly that I didn’t have thigh pain anymore – while before the pain started after walking for a short period of time or feeling stiff in the morning, it’s rare for me to feel a twinge of it now, whether I’m doing high-impact or low-impact exercises.
I am able to meditate more effectively. I’ve always loved the idea of stillness (and let’s face it, I needed more of it in my life) but until now I’ve been struggling to really make it happen. The PEMF mat encouraged me to feel more connected in a way that felt effortless and seemed to help me clear my mind more efficiently than any mental exercise I had done before.
Instead of dreading the idea of stillness, I enjoy it now. Time on a PEMF rug feels sacred – and you don’t need to be spiritual to feel it. My mom—who once declared that she’d rather walk over hot coals than listen to someone talk about spirituality (the sarcasm was not lost in me)—tried it a few weeks ago after some heavy persuasion from me, and said she also felt more peaceful, better able to clear her mind.
Which brings me to the most profound way that PEMF has affected me: I feel less anxious.
Perhaps it has to do with a clearer mind, perhaps it has to do with the basic effect of a daily exercise and routine, or perhaps it has to do with magnetotherapy that helps calm the parasympathetic nervous system (also referred to as “ rest and digestion` because it works to maintain the body’s natural activity, and it relaxes us once the passage of a perceived emergency).
Whatever the case, I feel more settled, more in control and less in control of the anxious instinct that makes my daily life a sort of colossal danger to me (although I know instinctively that moving between the sofa and my fridge is unlikely to pose any real threat – except Threatening to empty the refrigerator).
I’m better able to focus on tasks during a day with a morning moment on the carpet, able to hold onto that sense of calm, rather than getting caught up in whirlpools of thought that lead to heightened anxiety.
I am not a miracle case. As Lauren Berlingeri told me, “There are so many benefits!”
“Bad cells lead to a stressed mind, which means worse sleep and poor concentration. Bad sleep leads to a chaotic day, which leads to more stress, which turns your central nervous system into an overactive state, resulting in worse sleep that night. This bad cycle They look awesome and create a lot of aging both internally and externally.
“In order to get enough rest at night, your body needs to produce the right amount of melatonin and human growth hormone (HGH). PEMF treatment helps release both hormones, resulting in deeper sleep and a better chance for your body to do the hard work. Healing works while it takes Your mind rest.
“You know how some people say, ‘You have good energy’ or ‘Only positive vibes? Well, that’s because our cells literally have their own voltage.
