Mental health history could cloud murder case in Auberry attack

AUBERRY, California (KFSN) – Action News has revealed evidence of mental health problems suffered by an Auberry man who was arrested for attacking his mother and killing her boyfriend.

A series of abstract photos show that Breton Begay is no stranger to the legal system.

The 29-year-old has two violent convictions, including assaulting his father in Inyo County when he was 19.

His father was seriously injured in the knife attack, and Begai was sentenced to six years in prison.

“He clearly has a history of violence,” legal analyst Tony Capose said. “He’s been convicted before. While in prison, he assaulted someone again.”

Court records show that Bejay served at least part of his prison sentence at Kolinga State Hospital due to mental health issues.

He secured a second conviction – one misdemeanor charge – after attacking an employee there in 2016.

An alert on his file said Begay could not understand the essential questions due to his mental health condition.

But Begay was out of custody last week when investigators said he stabbed 50-year-old Owen Hancock to death.

Fresno County sheriffs found Begay in a home with Hancock’s body after discovering Begay’s mother had stab wounds at the nearby Mono Wind Casino.

PJ is accused of trying to kill his mother and her boyfriend Hancock.

Legal analyst Tony Kaposi says Begay’s previous cases likely inform the defense in this case.

He said, “He needs to be examined in terms of his mental health in two parts: one in terms of competence.” “Does he understand what’s going on? Second: Was he crazy at the time of this incident?”

PJ appeared in court for the first time in the murder case on Monday.

The judge did not allow us to record the hearing, but Begay was wearing a yellow suit indicating a potential danger to himself or others.

We can learn more about Begay’s mental health condition and its impact on the case in two weeks’ time when he is due to return to court to file a petition.
