Manchester United travelling squad vs Chelsea includes Fred

Manchester United will have Fred available to play a role against Chelsea on Sunday amid concerns about the Brazilian’s injury.

United gathered at Manchester Airport on Saturday afternoon to fly to London ahead of their game against the table-top Blues on Sunday (4.30pm).

Captain Harry Maguire has been suspended from his visit to Stamford Bridge, while United remain without absentees from long-term injuries Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane.

Eric Bailly is likely to enter defense alongside Victor Lindelof, while interim coach Michael Carrick will have to make decisions about his midfield, given Fred suffered a sprained ankle against Villarreal in midweek. Phil Jones may be part of the match day squad, having traveled to London.

Luke Shaw, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani both missed that showdown due to injuries, and they are all doubtful for the Chelsea game. They were not spotted at the airport by the men’s photographers but part of the United squad arrived at an entrance that they had not seen.

Scott McTominay, Tommy Heaton, Alex Telles, Fred and Nemanja Matic.

As such, 14 members of the traveling squad could be confirmed at this point, with 19 or 20 members expected to travel in total. That includes the unqualified Maguire, who went with the team in a non-playing role.

United have lost five of their last seven Premier League games, a streak that culminated in the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after last Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at Watford.

And while United have Ralph Rangnick on their waiting list to start working as interim manager, Carrick will be the man in the Chelsea squad.

United face the host team in rampant form, after their 4-0 Champions League win over Juventus at Stamford Bridge in midweek. Thomas Tuchel’s men will remain top of the league no matter what happens on Sunday, save for a defeat to United and a seven-goal swing to Man City, who face West Ham at the start of the game.
