Flamengo’s right-back Ramon Ramos Lima confirmed that he had an accident on Saturday evening that killed a cyclist in Rio de Janeiro.
Ramon, 20, ran over Jonatas Devi dos Santos, a motorcyclist to deliver food in Rio’s Barra de Tijuca neighborhood, and immediately stopped to call an ambulance.
Dos Santos, 30, died on his way to the hospital, and Ramon, who was reportedly accompanied by his wife at the time of the accident, went to a nearby police station to make a statement before being released.
Ramon said in a statement that he respected traffic laws and was within the speed limit when the accident occurred.
“I feel sorry for the tragic accident I had last Saturday night in Barra da Tijuca, the western region of Rio de Janeiro,” Ramon said. “This incident ended with the death of Mr. Jonatas Davi dos Santos.
“I confirm I was within the speed limit when I was surprised by Jonathan who was on a bike.
“I repeat that immediately after the accident, I requested assistance and remained on site to provide all assistance and information to the authorities. I made myself available to cooperate with the investigations into the case.
“We are in contact with Jonathan’s family to provide the necessary support and cooperation with possible burial expenses. It is a time of great sadness and affection, but also a time of respect and love for others. Let’s overcome this together.”
Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim said the club would have Ramon’s support after the tragedy.
Ramon, who came on as a substitute in his team’s 1-1 draw at Sport Recife on Friday, He was left out of Flamengo’s squad for Monday’s match Against Santos at the Maracana.
He has made 38 appearances for Flamengo, 24 of them this season, since making his first division appearance for the club in 2018.
