Lansing City Football forms, will play in USL League Two in 2022

Can Lansing support two men’s semi-professional soccer teams?

We’ll find out next summer, with Friday’s announcement of the city’s newest team, Lansing City Football, and its affiliation with USL League Two.

Lansing City Football is a division of the Lansing City Futsal Team, which was founded in 2016 by President/Owner Jeremy Klipal. Klepal – a Grand Ledge native now living in Ionia – played for the US men’s national team at the FIFA Futsal World Cup last summer.

Klepal has been exploring the idea of starting an 11-man squad at Lansing since 2019, after folding Lansing Ignite, who also played under the USL umbrella in League One.

“I’ve always felt the Lansing football team was a great idea,” Klipal said. “I just feel like Lansing needs more culture around entertainment and the things families can do together.

“Sports teams play a big part in that and when Lansing United and Lansing Ignite were around I thought that was really cool and that the future of Lansing was going in the right direction because there are people trying to do interesting things that bring families together.”
