Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup To Return In 2022 For 107th Edition Of U.S. Soccer’s National Championship

CHICAGO (December 22, 2021) – The U.S. Soccer Open Cup Committee has approved competition format and determined each division’s entry round for the 2022 edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open at its meeting yesterday.

The 2022 tournament will see changes that were ratified after the conclusion of the 2019 tournament but were never implemented when the 2020 and 2021 editions of the NFL were canceled due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Revised competition format

In a major change, the competition format for 2022 will see 17 top-tier MLS clubs enter the third round, well ahead of one MLS team round that entered in 2019.

The remaining eight MLS clubs, which will include the four USA participants in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League and the top two of the best American teams in the regular season in both the Eastern and Western Conferences of the League, will enter the Round of 32.

The coordination review increases the number of matches between top-flight football’s top division teams and those from lower divisions across multiple rounds of competition, starting with the third round. It also increases the chance of up to 24 lower-tier clubs reaching the round of 32, up from 11 in 2019. The 2019 tournament featured 11 “David vs. Goliath” matches that featured MLS teams during the first four rounds, while 2022 will be It has 17 matches in the third round plus up to 16 more matches (depending on the results of the third round and round of 32 draws) in the next round.

In addition, the Open Cup Committee has decided that all eligible second- and third-tier professional division teams will enter the second round, while teams from the Open Division – which includes all clubs and leagues outside the three professional divisions – will begin in the first round.

Expanded competition calendar

In July 2021, the committee endorsed the 2022 competition schedule, with the first round set for 22-23 March, the first start in the modern era for the Open Cup (1995 to date).

An expanded tournament calendar will allow tours to be conducted at least two weeks apart, providing additional time for local teams to market and sell tickets and to visit clubs to arrange travel earlier at a lower cost. In 2019, there was only one week between rounds one and two, as well as rounds 32 and 16.

Equally important, for the first time in the modern era of the Open Championship when all eligible professional teams participate (2012-present), all rounds involving professional clubs will take place outside of the national team call-up periods. This scheduling feature, which is typical of all major domestic cup competitions around the world, will allow all top players, excluding injury or suspension, to be available for selection in each round.

2022 first round clubs

The first round will see teams from the Open Division face off: Division 11 Open qualifiers advanced this fall; Landsdowne Yonkers FC (New York), the 2021 US Senior National Football League Championship Champion; and a number of clubs to be selected from the National Football League Premier League and USL League Two, the nationwide amateur leagues that have elected the National Leagues track for the Open Division (using league results from 2021) for the 2022 Open Cup qualifying teams.

Match identification is coming

The method for determining pairs per round and the number of berths allocated to the NPSL and USL League sides will be determined by the Open Cup Committee after the December 31, 2021 pro team confirmation deadline and announced in early January.
