Lady Gaga’s hairstylist and boyfriend of 12 years, Frederic Asperas, told People that he spent months emotionally invested in creating hairstyles for Gaga’s character Patricia Reggiani, on “House of Gucci.”
Aspiras recalled a case where he started crying after she asked him to dye her hair brown to prepare for the role.
“We re-dyed her real hair from her signature platinum blonde to brown months before filming, just so she feels in character,” Esperas told People Daniela Avila. “I mean, you’re talking about a person so loyal to characterization and art who willingly wanted to color white hair.”
He added, “It just got past her shoulder, it was so healthy, it’s gorgeous, and I wanted to color it brown. And so was my side. I was crying.” ‘I was like, ‘Are you sure about that?’ ‘Like yes.’ And we painted it brown.”
Aspiras told the outlet that among the many incarnations of her hairstyle, Joico Blonde Life Color’s signature platinum blonde is “most of it.”
The film, released on November 24, focuses on Reggiani, who was convicted of hiring a hitman to murder her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver, in 1995.
Aspiras told People that preparing many of the hairstyles Gaga wore throughout the film was a five-month process that required him to undergo extensive research on Italian women at the time.
“I sat with this script in my house during COVID, and for five months I went over the script page by page and thought about the characterization of the person, the inspiration of what the hairstyle would look like in this scene, and the real-life picture of Patrizia at the time.”
His work resulted in 10 wigs and a “500-page guide” detailing all of Gaga’s hairstyles. Esperas said his work on the film was a “passionate project”.
Asperas told People that Gaga’s only request regarding her appearance was, “I don’t want to see Lady Gaga on screen!”
Representatives for Gaga and Aspiras did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
