Actors Tom Cruise and Kirsten Dunst worked together on her feature film, Interview with the vampire. It was 1994 and she was about 12 years old, but she revealed that the A-list legend sends her an annual gift for the holidays. And it turns out, it’s a big deal among those in Hollywood to end up on the Cruise cake gift list.
So, what’s the deal with Cake Cruise, how did this Hollywood holiday tradition get started, and where can fans get their hands on theirs?
Tom Cruise sends cakes to Kirsten Dunst and other stars
Dunst said The Graham Norton Show At her home, they call Cruise’s annual gift – the white chocolate coconut cake – “cruise cake.”
She said it’s “the best coconut cake [she’s] ever in [her] life” which is “something important” when the gift arrives. She explained, “We all love, ‘The Cruz cake is here!’”
Others—James Corden, Angela Bassett, Jimmy Fallon, and Rosie O’Donnell—get a cake from the big star, too. While talking to Corden with Bassett late show, She admitted that she keeps a “cruise cake” for herself. “I just eat it,” she said.
Notably, Cruz admitted that he loves to send cakes because he shuns sugar. Therefore, he loves to hear from people about how great they are.
He said, “I’m waiting for the calls.” “Like, tell me about it.”
So, as a side note, don’t forget to call Tom Cruise and tell him how amazing the cake is, if you end up on his list of cakes with an A-list.
The famous Cruz cake is a white chocolate coconut cake from Duane Bakery
For nearly a decade, Cruz relied on Doan’s Bakery to make an impression on some of his famous friends. Sweet Shop is a family run business in California. According to them, there have been years when Cruise’s gift-giving business has kept its shop and running.
“The funny thing is, we’ve been making that cake for a quarter of a century,” Eric Doan told Yahoo. “It’s just a unique cake that we dreamed of for 25 years and always made for various cafes, restaurants and caterers.”
He shared that the bakery sells white chocolate coconut brownies and cookies to the public and even works with Goldbelly to ship them nationwide.
But don’t fully expect an A-list show. The bakery received complaints that the packaging didn’t look like the photos of Cruise’s gifts to the stars. That’s because the actor has a cast that privately wraps his gifts in a “secondary location,” according to Duane.
Diane Keaton introduced Tom Cruise to the cake in a tasting test with Katie Holmes
Cruz’s ex-wife, Katie Holmes, is part of the story that started the tradition. According to Yahoo, both actor Diane Keaton and Holmes thought they knew who made the best cake, so they flew the desserts for a taste test with Cruise as the judge.
Keaton preferred the white chocolate coconut cake from Duane Bakery. And that was Cruz’s choice, too. Doan noted to Yahoo that Keaton has been a fan of cake “for a long time” longer than Cruise. The rest appears to be an impressive history of gift-giving.
