If you’ve ever spent time on TikTok, you’ve probably heard of “coffee” or “protein coffee” – a popular drink that combines black coffee with a protein shake. There is no strict pro recipe – most people use black coffee or espresso and their favorite protein shake and ice. Some prefer to replace ready-made protein shakes with protein powder, and some add sweeteners or juices for flavor.
Many people are drawn to the pros because they love the idea of getting some protein early on. But do we really need protein in a Our coffee when we’re most likely, or should we say hopeEat breakfast at the same time? To find out, we reached out to registered dietitians Jimmy Hickey and Robbie Ali, MS, RDN, to get their thoughts on this growing trend. Do we need protein in our coffee?
If you are eating a balanced diet and consuming enough protein throughout the day, there is no need to add protein to your coffee as well. However, if you’re using a nutritious protein powder (say, one that’s not loaded with excess sugar and other additives), there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with proffee either.
Ali points out that the potential benefits for the moderator depend on how the drink is made. You’ll want to consider factors like the type of protein shake or powder you’re using, whether you’re adding sweeteners, and what type of coffee you’re using. Lifestyle factors are also important, such as whether you eat breakfast every day or use specialists in place of a meal.
“For those who can’t get enough calories or protein or skip their meals completely, proffee is a great addition to help you boost your intake and meet your protein needs,” she says. For others, she adds, blending a protein shake into your coffee may help reduce added sugar. She points out that the idea here is that some may reduce the addition of sugar or sweeteners to their morning coffee if they like the taste of coffee when combined with a protein shake alone.
Is Proffee Nutritious?
Whether your daily effort is nourishing depends largely on the ingredients that go into it, and these ingredients can vary greatly from one professional to another. Think of it this way: If the protein shake you use in your article has a lot of added sugar, you may end up consuming more sugar than intended every day, without even realizing it. Or your protein shake might have unexpected additives.
But if you’re using a protein shake that you’re comfortable with (if you’re not sure, you can always ask a registered dietitian for their recommendations), you’re probably fine. Hickey says that one of the benefits of proffee is that by using a nutritious protein powder, you can add beneficial vitamins and minerals to your diet, while also increasing your energy levels.
While the drink may have an extra boost of protein to keep you going in the morning, most people definitely don’t need to eat every day. “There is nothing in the definition that you shouldn’t actually receive on a balanced diet consisting of whole foods, fruits, and vegetables,” Hickey says.
What are the benefits of drinking brophy?
For some, a professional may offer a solid dose of fuel before a workout. “Because caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, it is an excellent physiological recovery and may also have a positive effect on physical performance,” Hickey says. For physically active people, taking caffeine and amino acids – which is protein – can improve performance of high-intensity exercise.
Nutritionally speaking, proffee can be a smart choice in certain scenarios. If you’re already eating a nutritionally sound breakfast, Ali says, there’s no need to add more. But if you skip breakfast a lot, proffee can help ignite your metabolism, fuel, and nourish your body. “You’ll provide nutrients and proteins that you would’ve completely skipped, otherwise.”
Are there any drawbacks to Profi?
Depending on the ingredients you use, foods high in calories, fat, and sugar can be high. Hickey makes a professional make-up by adding two tablespoons of the organic protein powder of his choice to an eight-ounce cup of black coffee. “Some people add sugar, juices, bleaches, and artificial flavors, and calories and fat build up quickly when they do this,” Hickey says. “It’s not healthy, and at this point it’s a lot like a candy-cutter bar.”
Another reason to be aware of your professional consumption is that caffeine can interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, iron and B vitamins.
Meanwhile, depending on the time of day you drink the alcoholic beverage, the caffeine content in the drink can interfere with your circadian rhythm and cause sleep disturbances, says Ali. So don’t sip too close to bedtime. If it’s a time of day when you don’t normally have coffee, you shouldn’t reach out to a professional either.
You should also look at your daily protein intake and see if you really need to add protein to your morning coffee. Most people get plenty of protein throughout the day without ever touching the protein. “If your diet is really adequate in terms of protein intake, it can add more protein to your diet,” says Ali.
Profi can fit into a nutritious diet, but it really depends on how you make it. It’s important to be mindful of the ingredients you’re using and know that you may be consuming more sugar, fat, and calories than intended. And if you’re looking for gains in protein alone, it probably isn’t necessary as long as you maintain a balanced diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods.
