Howard enjoys learning about Gamecocks’ nutrition program

JACKSONVILLE (FL) Andrew Jackson’s 2023 three-star quarterback Grayson “Pup” Howard has already been to South Carolina a few times, so Priority Target is already very familiar with what the show has to offer.

However, his latest trip, for Junior’s Day in South Carolina Saturday, offered a look at a different side of the program.

“It was just about learning new things about the nutrition aspect,” Howard explained. “We made pizza. We took regular pictures. Then Coach Day and his team did their presentation about the weight room and training. Coach Beemer gave his presentation on the staff and everything. He was just learning a little bit of the details. It was just another day there for me. That was it. Great for cooking and getting to know the nutritionist.”

Kristen Cogen, director of FB Nutrition in South Carolina, is often hailed by those on the show as a little-known behind-the-scenes heroine and Howard was impressed with what he learned.

“I think it’s unusual,” Howard said. “She showed me pictures of all the guys she had in her house teaching them how to cook. She teaches them all about nutrition, because I always knew that nutrition was probably about 70 percent of the process. You have to put the right things into your body so you can perform right. I think She totally confirms it. This is her job and she does a great job at it.”

As for the pizza he made? Still adjusting his recipe.

“I was going to give it a solid seven. It was my first time making pizza, but there are many times to make pizza.”

It’s no surprise that Howard and Kogen beat her up. He says he has a strong relationship with many of the coaches on the staff.

But defensive coordinator Clayton White and analyst Chuck Wilson are closest to him now.

“I’m very close to them,” Howard said. “But every time I go in there, I talk to everyone. I talk to Coach Beamer and Coach Day, every coach is a nutritionist position, to the GAs, everyone. I definitely think in South Carolina they just want to put me in the middle of the defense and let me I’m versatile and do the players, just help the team get the title and lead the defense.”

Howard plans to release a senior group in late spring or early summer and is currently planning to decide on an early signing day before signing up early.

Although he doesn’t claim to be a favourite, he has a lot of positive things to say about Gamecocks.

“I’m really comfortable with them,” Howard said. “I’ve been there a few times and get along with the coaching staff really well. I’m very close to them and I believe in them and I definitely think they’re doing great things in South Carolina.”

Howard plans to visit Tennessee next week.
