The pandemic has prompted many of us to order groceries online to stay safe and avoid the bare aisles where everyone stocked them.

But the transition to online grocery shopping wasn’t ideal. According to a recent study published Thursday.

Although online shopping may be convenient, the system does not take into account food allergy or medically necessary dietary restrictions.

The study published in Public Health Nutrition found that packaged foods are required by law to contain nutritional facts and ingredients available for consumers to review, but none of this information was listed in online grocery stores.

“I think it’s a misconception that people don’t read food labels,” said study co-author Jennifer Pomeranz, associate professor of public health policy and management at New York University’s School of Global Public Health.

The study identified and analyzed 10 nationally packaged products across nine online retailers and found that nutritional facts and ingredients were not included at all in nearly 11% of the products. Products with this information did not disclose the presence of common food allergens, according to Healthline.

Wendy White, industry director for food and beverage at Georgia Institute of Technology, said, “I think the FDA is definitely taking steps to correct this gap that currently exists in some types of online food sales, but unfortunately the speed at which the FDA can create And drug and regulatory enforcement is then remarkably slow.”
