Florida Baker Acts skyrocketed by 121%

LAKELAND — Last year, a grand jury called Florida’s mental illness treatment system a “sad case” and “with pressing problems.”

In Polk County, a mental health treatment stakeholder recently completed a year-long study showing that one in seven of your friends, neighbors and co-workers report that they live with depression or are at risk of behavioral health challenges.

Law enforcement officials are on the front lines in the battle against mental illness.

According to the website of the University of South Florida Baker Law Report Center:

• Florida’s population increased by about 22% to 21.5 million.

• Baker’s business increased by 121%

• 2001-2002 – 95,574 people

• 2018-2019 – 21,992 people
