Getting enough protein in your diet is important at any age because it “can help maintain muscle mass, strength, and bone health, and is one of the best ways to aid weight loss efforts.” Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, author of GoWellness.
However, protein becomes more important to your well-being as you age. “Those over 60 are more likely to lose muscle mass, and not eating enough protein throughout the day can speed up the process,” says D’Angelo.
She suggests incorporating more foods like eggs, salmon, beef, chicken or turkey into your diet when you can. “You can even adapt a healthy habit in the morning by choosing to add whey protein to your coffee or oatmeal, that way you can start your day on a strong note.”

Another common habit to avoid in your 60s is getting dehydrated and not drinking enough water. “As you age, your thirst may diminish,” he says. Lisa Young, Ph.D., RDN, author Finally full, finally skinny, and a member of our Medical Experts Council, said, “Therefore, people in their 60s tend to be more dehydrated than younger people.”

Many people may not realize it, but eating late at night can harm your health, even if you eat healthy foods!
Young cautions that “late night eating often goes hand in hand with heavily processed junk food, which is particularly problematic, as nighttime overeating is associated with weight gain, blood sugar fluctuations, and diabetes in a group of the population already at risk.

One of the worst eating habits to follow is not getting enough fiber in your daily diet, as this nutrient is essential to help you live a healthy life.
“Be sure to include insoluble fiber to keep you regular, and soluble fiber to feed the beneficial bacteria that live inside your gut to improve nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation, and positively impact your mood,” Kara Landau, RD, a nutrition expert in gut health and founder of Uplift Food.
To get a good dose of fiber, try incorporating foods like berries, oatmeal, apples, beans or chickpeas into your daily diet.
