In an interview with SPORT1, Borussia Dormtund CEO Aki Watzke publicly admitted that Real Madrid’s interest in the Norwegian star and Erling Haaland is very strong.
“I know that all the big European clubs want him (Haaland), especially Real Madrid,” Watsky told Sport 1: “The great interest of Real Madrid has been confirmed. I think one day, La Liga will be better for them than the Premier League (English Premier League).”
This has been interpreted by some Premier League clubs, particularly Manchester City, as a blow to their chances, but any deal is so far uncertain. There will be a full-blown bidding war for Haaland this summer, and Real Madrid will be one of the many clubs that will not only have to convince Haaland of their project, but also that he and his agent (Mino Raiola) will make up for it nicely.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has said in the past few months that they cannot compete financially for Haaland, but that they will rely on their project, vision and brand as part of their offer.
Watzke’s message could also be a way of indirectly telling the top clubs to increase their game and increase their offering, because the interest from Real Madrid is very real.
