California Roars Back: Governor Newsom Launches New Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being with Co-Chairs First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and 10-Time Pro Bowler Ronnie Lott

Governor announces new advisory board as he visits Central Valley Health Club now open at full capacity

BACKERSfield — With California’s economy fully reopening and most COVID-19 restrictions in gyms and fitness centers lifted, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the Governor’s Advisory Board on Fitness and Mental Wellbeing, a new advisory board tasked with exploring health strategies to ensure Californians can thrive. . With a particular focus on children’s physical and mental health, the advisory board will be led and convened by Senior Partner Jennifer Seibel Newsom, whose California for ALL Kids initiatives support children’s physical, mental, social and emotional well-being, and Pro Football Hall of Fame recruiter Ronnie Lott.

“As California reopens, we must address the effects of this pandemic on physical fitness and mental health,” Governor Newsom said. “Today, with California senior partner and football legend Ronnie Lott, we are launching an advisory board focused on fitness and wellbeing, two issues that need a long-term commitment and strategy to ensure our residents, especially young people, have the physical exercise and self-care they need to thrive.”

Joined the Governor at In-Shape Health Clubs in Bakersfield today is the California Principal Partner, who was a Division I athlete as an undergraduate at Stanford University, as well as a member of the women’s national soccer team.

“Through the Governor’s Advisory Board, we will help ensure Californians of all ages — especially children and young adults — are healthy in mind and body, and are able to thrive in all aspects of their lives,” said Senior Partner. “After all, healthy California begins with healthy children and families.”

“As a professional athlete, I’ve always done my best on and off the field,” said Ronnie Lott, who helped secure four Super Bowl wins for the San Francisco 49ers. “By integrating fitness and mental health into the lives of our young people, we will give them some of the skills and support that have helped me throughout my career as a professional player.”

The advisory board will include representatives from health and wellness organizations, youth sports programs, education, the leisure and fitness industry, and others from across the state. Among the council’s activities are:

  • Advise on the development of physical activity and wellness goals for Californians of all ages.
  • Advise on ways to raise awareness among all age groups, especially among children and youth, about how physical activity, sports, nutrition and mental wellness contribute to a healthy and productive life.
  • Encourage intergenerational fitness activities, including the use of physical activity and sports to strengthen the family.
  • Facilitate collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies, education, business, industry, the private sector, and others in promoting physical activity and mental wellness.
