Well, a new study suggests that the prevalence of the disease in middle age may be more of a lifestyle issue than a metabolic issue. What do you really know about your metabolism?

A new study from the University of Aberdeen turns the metabolic world upside down. In fact, metabolism is shown to peak at age one, and slowly decline until age twenty.

But then, over the next 40 years, your metabolism doesn’t change at all. But then, it takes a sharp decline every year after age 60.

So, what makes us gain weight as we age? Some experts believe that the reason for this is a sedentary lifestyle and the foods we eat. To increase your metabolism, eating protein can help and even cause you to burn 150 to 200 extra calories per day.

If you are feeling thirsty, green tea can increase metabolic functions by four to five percent. Regular weight training can increase your metabolic rate from 6.8 to 7.8 percent. You can also increase your metabolism when you sleep.

Lower the temperature between 60 and 67 degrees before bed. This helps you maintain the good fats that maintain body temperature and burn other fats.

Another surprise from the study… There was no increase in metabolism during puberty or pregnancy and no slowing down in menopause.
