2022 Concacaf Champions League draw: Sounders will face Motagua

Just like the last time they were in the CONCACAF Champions League, the Seattle Sounders will open against a Honduran team based in the capital, Tegucigalpa. But this time, FC Motagua will be their opponent. CD Olympia, who shares their stadium with Motagua, knocked out a penalty shootout in 2020.

The first round of matches is scheduled to take place from February 15-17 and February 22-24. The Sounders will host the return match.

Although the Sounders previously played at Estadio Tiburcio Carías Andino at 2015-16 CCL, the 2020 match was moved to San Pedro Sula as it fell short of CONCACAF standards. It was not immediately clear whether these issues had been resolved.

Motagua qualified through the CONCACAF League, where they finished second. In the last season of the Liga Nacional, Motagua finished the regular season in second place, points ahead of Olympia, who also knocked him out of the semi-final qualifiers.

The best player in recent years is midfielder Kevin Lopez, who has scored 36 goals over the past four seasons.
