Oh, to be taken away to a private island to propose to you…
Celebrities – it’s not just us! While some people may choose to go for a grand gesture for their proposal, no ordinary person can beat these lavish celebrity proposals. Here are some over the top!
In perhaps one of the most luxurious shows ever, Kanye West rented an AT&T park in San Francisco, had 50 pieces of music playing Kim Kardashian’s favorite Lana Del Rey song, and proposed to a jumbotron with a $4 million ring. The proposal alone cost $3.3 million, and it happened on Kim’s birthday.
He also flew in on Kim’s entire family and friends to witness the proposal and ran out to surprise her afterwards. This was broadcast on Kim’s Show, keeping up with the Kardashians.
A quick couple update, in case you’ve been living under a rock: After tying the knot in 2014, Kim recently filed for divorce in 2021.
He comes close behind Seal’s proposal to model Heidi Klum. In 2004, Seal flew Heidi away to the Canadian Rockies by helicopter.
He ordered an igloo built there, and put a bed inside with rose petals and candles everywhere, as well as food and champagne.
The two married in 2005, but separated in 2012.
After a short-lived romance in the late 2000s, actor/comedian Russell Brand and singer Katy Perry became engaged in India.
Next, Brand revealed that they were sitting on an elephant, and that fireworks were involved.
The two married in 2010 in India, and separated about a year later before finalizing their divorce in 2012.
Katie has since been engaged to actor Orlando Bloom – and his proposal was similarly lavish.
It all started informally – he met Berry Bloom in an Italian restaurant. But things soon improved when Bloom announced that he had ordered a helicopter, and proposed to board it. The ring is believed to have cost about $5 million.
They landed in a building where all of Katie’s friends and family had been waiting, along with “the most flowers I’ve ever seen,” according to Katie, who she compared to Kanye’s lavish gestures to Kim. The two are not yet married (although some fans think they are), but they welcomed their daughter together in 2020.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were some of the hottest couples of the 2000s.
And their proposal was no less well known. Tom suggested his proposal at Le Jules Verne restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower, which is notoriously difficult to get a reservation for. Unless, you know, you’re Tom Cruise.
Nick Cannon’s proposal to Mariah Carey started off very low key – he suggested a candy ring containing the real thing – but things escalated when he decided to make a second proposal.
That’s right, folks – one suggestion wasn’t enough. After initially proposing with a candy ring, Canon “kidnapped” Maria in a helicopter and proposed again with a $2.5 million ring.
The two married in 2008, but separated in 2014. They have two children together.
Speaking of rings… when Paris Latsis proposed to Paris Hilton, he set her fifteen rings to choose from.
Of course, they were all from brands like Tiffany and Harry Winston. She reportedly chose a $5 million ring that was 24 karat.
However, the couple broke off their engagement a few months later, and Paris auctioned off the ring to raise money for people affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Paris has actually been proposed a few times – most recently to Carter Réome, who proposed to her in a flower-filled cabana on a private island. Riom proposed a custom ring designed by Jean Doucet, grandson of Louis Cartier, and named it “Paris” and worth about $2 million.
Ludacris and Eudoxie Agnan, like many others on this list, had a show on board.
This happened on a private plane – Ludacris pointed down from the windows and showed Eudoxie that the words “Eudoxie Will You Marry Me” had been dropped on the floor below.
Days later, they tied the knot and are still together today. They welcomed their first child in 2015, and their second in 2021.
Another proposal for a private jet… Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. Tom brought Giselle on a private plane and surprised her with white roses, champagne, a huge engagement ring, and her parents.
After only three dates with Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas closed down Tiffany’s to pick a ring for her.
Then he took her to Crete on her birthday, and proposed to her a little after midnight so that it would not coincide with her birthday.
The two married in 2018, and are still married today.
After attending Paris Fashion Week together, Russell Wilson takes his girlfriend Ciara away on a surprise trip, giving her 30 destinations to guess in a game of Travel Roulette. You did not guess where they are going – the exclusive North Island resort in the Seychelles, where many famous people and members of the royal family spent their vacations. He then proposed to her on his honeymoon beach for a 16-carat ring believed to be worth between $2 and 2.5 million.
They married secretly in a castle in England a few months later in July 2016.
Tori Spelling had not one, not two, but three proposals from the same man – her husband, Dean McDermott. He was first proposed at a Christmas tree farm in Toronto on Christmas Eve in 2005, as he and Tori took a horse-drawn carriage ride through the farm lit up with Christmas lights, settling down at a special table.
And the second a year later, after they got married, overlooking a lake. The third was as recently as 2016, at the Cafe de L’Homme in front of the Eiffel Tower, where McDermott booked the balcony. Spelling gave an antique engagement ring in front of their children. Then they all celebrated at the opulent Palace of Versailles and posed for photos in vintage-inspired fashion from Les Suites, a French boutique. The two are still married and have five children.
Finally, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian surprised Serena Williams with a trip to Rome in 2016. They went to the same restaurant where they first met and even sat at the same table (which was sprinkled with rose petals) .. where Alexis suggested a 2 million ring dollar.
The two were married – and welcomed a daughter – the following year, and are still together today.
